Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my parents. I remember endless winter nights at home, watching Black & White Egyptian dramas of “So3ad hosni” and “Hind Rustom” from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Not to mention, Shirley Mclaine in The Apartment & Irma La Douce, and Marlyn Monroe’s endless list of movies; I wasn’t only attracted to the cheesy unrealistic drama but always to the outfits. Hubert de Givenchy, Balenciaga & Dior revolutionized women’s wear in the 1950s by highlighting the waistline & creating flattering V necks. Glamour, elegance, poise reigned with feminine silhouettes, full skirts, exquisite fabrics, and perfectly matched hair & accessories.
I was born in the 80s and constantly felt like contemporary fashion did not relate to me, especially having a curvaceous body with a slim waist. Growing up in the 90s, beauty & fashion standards were all about tall and skinny, and I was neither. I admit this had a role to play in why my heart belonged to times where bodies were fuller, and fashion was more waist-centered, and perfection (a trait I had in me) was on top of a woman’s daily look.
It always felt to me that I was born in the wrong decade.
For a day, I wanted to take myself back & live that 50s moment. I picked a voluminous high waist @majeofficiel skirt and matched it with a flattering off-shoulder blouse, a pearl necklace & @zara sling back sandals. I researched hairdos that could work for me and there it was, retro and flirtatious with the 50s inspired bold eyeliner makeup.
